Where Do I Start With My Home Make Over?
I can’t help smiling when I remember my first few home makeovers. Disorganization and confusion overwhelmed me as I bumbled through those early projects. Now when D.Y.I. home makeovers come to me I can completely understand their plight.
My Favorite DYI Home Make Over Comments
1. “Home make over decisions drive me crazy! I want egg shell blue, my mom ‘suggests’ pink am my husband tells me I am wasting money again!”
2. “Isn’t there a checklist or something that will make all my decisions for me?”
3. “I’ll just get everything I need in the morning, and finish the home make over by dinner.”
4. “White is the color, it matches everything!”
Good Advice
STOP! Before any plans or checklists are completed, I need to ask why are you embarking on a home make over? Well no, I don’t need the answer. But I need YOU to be clear on the answer because it will dramatically influence the advice you to listen to and ultimately the transformation your home receives.
Let me give you an example, if you are planning to sell you will want to appeal to the most number of potential home buyers. Or if you want to bring your home into the current millenium what current styles are ‘you’ and how do you make your new style ‘flow’ throughout the house?
Preparation Is King
OK, you know why you need a home makeover. Next is preparation. Start your preparation with de-cluttering. That means organizing, giving away, donating and throwing out. Tackle one room at a time. And take some time to checkout some of the economical, yet effective storage systems available.
Don’t forget you can hire someone to de-clutter for you if the process is too painful. Similarly the cleaning process is paramount. It doesn’t matter who does the scrub up but it needs to be done to perfection. Everything must sparkle and shine. I guarantee after these two steps your home will start to feel renewed.
Inspiration
Now the fun! Grab yourself a note book and divide it into rooms. Every time you see a picture you like, stick it in your notebook for the appropriate room. Before and after photos are also great inspiration. In a short space of time you will have a clearer idea of colors, lighting, arrangement, and style.
Home makeovers are awefully fun! I wish you all the best with your makeover. Keep checking this blog for inspiration and guidance. And if you need some advice please drop me a line in the comments and I’ll do what I can to help.
